He served as an ocean lifeguard in Spring Lake for seven summers and surfs year-round.Įven then, Saturday’s effort was a leap of faith. As a high schooler he ran on Christian Brothers Academy’s powerhouse cross country team, then completed triathlons while a student at The College of New Jersey. ![]() Rooney, a 36-year-old Howell native, knows a thing or two about going the distance. “The guy is putting his body through hell for me.” The 'ripple effect' “Joe is just a phenomenal human being,” he said. Nichols is beyond grateful for the support. “At that point we were all delirious, and that helped to push us home.” Rooney said.
